The word plastic in plastic surgery means to mould or shape. Thus plastic surgery is a procedure to re-construct or re-shape some part of the human body. Plastic surgery may be performed to correct impairments caused by accidents, burns, birth defects, disease and so on.

Plastic surgery usually involves skin grafting. Skin tissue is taken either from the patient or a donor and transplanted to re-construct or re-shape a part of the patient.

Plastic surgery that is done for asthetic reasons to enhance physical appearance is called Cosmetic surgery. We will limit our discussion to Cosmetic Surgery in this article.
